Industrial chillers - what to choose for your equipment?

Industrial chillers - what to choose for your equipment?

In our previous article, we found that the lifespan of CO2 laser tubes (such as RECI, eCO2, or EFR) is directly dependent on adequate cooling. But today we want to broaden the horizon, because industrial water chillers are not just for lasers!

These very same cooling systems are also absolutely critical for CNC router spindles, UV LED printers, TIG/MIG welding machines, and even laboratory equipment. Heat is the number one enemy of machinery, whether it's generated by laser gases or a CNC spindle rotating at thousands of revolutions per minute.

The four most popular models on the market are CW-3000, CW-5000, CW-5200, and CW-6000. But did you know that one of them isn't actually a real chiller, and another is designed specifically for heavy industry? Let's look at their differences so you don't make an expensive mistake!

1. CW-3000: Passive Radiator

The biggest mistake beginners make is thinking that the CW-3000 is a full-fledged chiller.

  • How it works: Inside the CW-3000, there is no compressor and no refrigerant (freon). It consists of a water pump, a radiator, and a large fan. It works exactly like a car radiator – it cools water by blowing ambient air through it.

  • Cooling capacity: Its power is rated at 50W/°C. This means that this unit will never be able to cool water below room temperature. If the workshop is 25°C, then 25°C warm water will circulate in the system.

  • What it's suitable for: * Lasers: Low-power CO2 lasers (K40, 40W, max. 50W) for short engraving jobs.

    • CNC machines: Small CNC spindles with power from 0.8kW to 1.5kW, which are not continuously overloaded.

2. CW-5000: The Industry "Gold Standard"

This is where real cooling begins. The CW-5000 is an active chiller.

  • How it works: This unit is like a small refrigerator. It has a full-fledged compressor and a freon system built-in. It can cool water much lower than room temperature and stably maintain the set ideal 15°C - 20°C.

  • Cooling capacity: Its cooling capacity is approximately 800W.

  • What it's suitable for: * Lasers: Ideally suited for machines with a single tube with power from 60W to 80W (also 100W with moderate load).

    • CNC and other machines: Excellent for cooling standard water-cooled CNC spindles with power 1.5kW to 3.0kW. Also suitable for smaller UV printing and welding machines.

3. CW-5200: Increased Power

Visually, the CW-5200 looks almost identical to the CW-5000 model, but inside it hides a much more serious "muscle mass."

  • How it works: This is also an active freon chiller, but it has a significantly larger and more powerful compressor, as well as a greater cooling circuit capacity.

  • Cooling capacity: Its cooling capacity reaches approximately 1400W (almost double that of the CW-5000). It can "knock down" the temperature much faster under heavy load conditions.

  • What it's suitable for: * Lasers: Powerful industrial machines with tube power 100W, 130W, 150W.

    • CNC and other machines: Powerful CNC spindles (3.0kW to 5.0kW or multi-spindle systems), intensive TIG/MIG welding, and industrial UV printers.

4. CW-6000: For simultaneous cooling of two units

When production volumes grow and equipment becomes massive, the CW-6000 comes into play. This is a true industrial heavyweight with dual circulation.

  • How it works: It is a high-performance freon chiller, often equipped with a dual water circulation system (two inlets and two outlets). This allows for physically diverting two independent cooling flows.

  • Cooling capacity: Its cooling capacity is impressive – approximately 3000W.

  • What it's suitable for: * Lasers: Specifically designed for cooling two simultaneously operating tubes (e.g., two 100W, 130W, or 150W tubes).

    • CNC and other machines: Large multi-spindle CNC machining centers, powerful metalworking milling spindles, large-format UV LED curing systems, and any production line that generates massive heat for hours.

Conclusion: Protect your investment!

Whether your daily routine involves cutting acrylic with a CO2 laser machine or milling solid wood with a CNC machine – don't cut corners on cooling! Trying to cool a serious CNC spindle or a powerful CO2 tube with a simple CW-3000 radiator, you risk irreversibly damaging the equipment in the first few months of more serious load.

A properly chosen active chiller will pay for itself by keeping your expensive equipment in working order and preventing unplanned downtime.
